2024 Mercedes-AMG GT Coupe: A Sexy and Practical Porsche 911 Rival

2024 Mercedes-AMG GT Coupe

The Mercedes-AMG GT Coupe is back with a new generation that promises to be more luxurious, versatile, and powerful than ever. The 2024 model year marks a significant evolution for the AMG GT Coupe, which now offers a 2+2 seating configuration, a fully variable all-wheel-drive system, and a range of V8 engines with up to 577 horsepower. The new AMG GT Coupe aims to challenge the Porsche 911 in the premium sports car segment while offering a distinctive style and personality that sets it apart from the crowd.

What's New for 2024?

The 2024 Mercedes-AMG GT Coupe is an all-new model that replaces the previous generation that debuted in 2015. The new AMG GT Coupe shares its platform and some of its components with the new Mercedes-AMG SL roadster, unveiled this year. However, the AMG GT Coupe has a unique design and character that differentiates it from its convertible sibling.

The most noticeable change is the addition of two rear seats, which makes the AMG GT Coupe a more practical and versatile choice for buyers who need occasional extra space. The rear seats could be more spacious, but they can accommodate children or small adults for short trips. Alternatively, they can be used to store luggage or other items, as the AMG GT Coupe also offers a decent trunk capacity of 10.6 cubic feet.

Another major change is introducing a fully variable all-wheel-drive system called 4Matic+, which replaces the rear-wheel-drive layout of the previous generation. The new system can distribute the torque between the front and rear axles as needed, depending on the driving mode and conditions. It can also send all the power to the rear wheels for a more dynamic and engaging driving experience. The system works in conjunction with an electronically controlled limited-slip differential, a nine-speed automatic transmission with a wet start-off clutch, and a rear-wheel steering system that improves agility and stability.

The new AMG GT Coupe also features a revised suspension system with semi-active, hydraulic roll stabilization and adaptive shock absorbers. The suspension can adjust to different road surfaces and driving situations, providing optimal comfort and performance. A front lift system is also standard, which can raise the nose of the car by 1.18 inches to avoid scraping on speed bumps or steep driveways.

What’s Under the Hood?

The 2024 Mercedes-AMG GT Coupe is powered by a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 engine that comes in two versions: the GT 55 and the GT 63. The GT 55 produces 469 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque, while the GT 63 delivers 577 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque. Both versions can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in less than four seconds, with the GT 63 being slightly quicker at 3.1 seconds. The top speed is also impressive, with the GT 55 reaching 183 mph and the GT 63 hitting 196 mph.

The V8 engine features an active engine mount system that adjusts its stiffness according to the driving mode and situation. This helps reduce vibrations and improve comfort and handling. The engine also has a cylinder deactivation system that can shut off four cylinders under light load to save fuel and reduce emissions. The EPA has not yet released the official fuel economy ratings for the new AMG GT Coupe, but we expect them to be similar to those of the AMG SL roadster, which are estimated at 18 mpg city, 24 mpg highway, and 20 mpg combined for both versions.

The engine sound is another important aspect of the AMG GT Coupe’s appeal, as it delivers a deep, throaty roar that matches its performance. The exhaust system has an active flap control that can vary the sound intensity depending on the driving mode and situation. The driver can also choose between three sound modes: Balanced, Powerful, or Emotive. Additionally, an optional AMG Performance exhaust system adds two more sound modes: Sport+ and Race.

What’s Inside?

The new AMG GT Coupe interior is a blend of luxury and sportiness, with high-quality materials, advanced technology, and ergonomic design. The dashboard features a large digital display that combines a 12.3-inch instrument cluster and an 11.9-inch touchscreen for the infotainment system. The display has a curved shape that follows the contour of the dashboard, creating a seamless and futuristic look.

The infotainment system runs on the latest version of Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX), which offers various features and functions such as navigation, smartphone integration, wireless charging, voice control, ambient lighting, head-up display, and more. The system also has an AMG-specific menu that provides information on performance data, lap times, engine settings, and other parameters. The system can be controlled by touch, gesture, voice, or a touchpad on the center console.

The seats are another highlight of the interior, as they offer excellent comfort and support for both the driver and the passengers. The front seats are power-adjustable, heated, and ventilated and have memory functions. They also have an integrated massage function that can help reduce fatigue and stress. The rear seats are also heated and have a fold-down armrest with cupholders. The seats are upholstered in Nappa leather, which can be customized with different colors and patterns. There are also optional AMG Performance seats with a more sporty and snug fit and carbon-fiber backrests.

The interior also offers plenty of storage space and convenience features, such as a glove box, a center console compartment, door pockets, seatback pockets, coat hooks, sun visors, and illuminated vanity mirrors. There are also multiple USB ports, 12-volt outlets, and a 115-volt household-style outlet for charging devices. The AMG GT Coupe also comes with a Burmester surround sound system that delivers high-quality audio with 13 speakers and a 590-watt amplifier. There is also an optional Burmester high-end 3D surround sound system that has 23 speakers and a 1,450-watt amplifier.

What’s On the Outside?

The exterior of the new AMG GT Coupe is a stunning example of AMG’s design philosophy, which harmoniously combines elegance and aggression. The car has a sleek and muscular shape that emphasizes its performance potential and aerodynamic efficiency. The wide Panamericana grille dominates the front end, which has vertical chrome slats and a large AMG logo. The grille is flanked by slim LED headlights that have a three-dot signature and a darkened housing. The hood has subtle bulges that add some character to the car’s face.

The side profile is smooth and flowing, with no sharp edges or creases interrupting the eye. The car has flush door handles that enhance its clean look and reduce drag. The fenders have large air vents behind the front wheels that help cool the brakes and improve aerodynamics. The roofline slopes gently towards the rear, creating a coupe-like silhouette. The car rides on 20-inch alloy wheels as standard, with 21-inch wheels available as an option. There are eight different wheel designs to choose from, ranging from elegant to sporty.

The rear end is equally attractive, with a full-width LED light bar that connects the taillights and creates a distinctive nighttime signature. The trunk lid has an integrated spoiler that can extend or retract depending on the speed and driving mode. The lower part of the rear bumper has a large diffuser that houses four round exhaust tips. The diffuser helps generate downforce and stability at high speeds. An optional Aerodynamics Package adds a fixed rear wing and additional front air deflectors for increased downforce.

The new AMG GT Coupe is available in 11 exterior colors, including two new ones: Brilliant Blue Magno and Cashmere White Magno. These matte finishes give the car a more exclusive and sophisticated appearance. There are also five exterior design packages that add different accents and details to the car’s body, such as carbon fiber, chrome, or black elements.

How Much Does It Cost?

The 2024 Mercedes-AMG GT Coupe will go on sale in the US in the first half of 2024, but the official pricing has not been announced yet. We expect it to be similar to or slightly higher than the pricing of the AMG SL roadster, which starts at $141,300 for the GT 55 version and $183,000 for the GT 63 version. These prices do not include destination charges or optional features.

The new AMG GT Coupe will compete with other premium sports cars such as the Porsche 911 Turbo ($174,300), the Audi R8 ($144,195), the Aston Martin Vantage ($149,995), and the Lexus LC ($93,050). However, none of these rivals offer a standard 2+2 seating configuration or an all-wheel-drive system.
