Mazda Iconic SP: A Rotary Revival for the 21st Century

Mazda Iconic SP

Mazda has always been a company that dares to be different. From its humble beginnings as a cork manufacturer in 1920 to its breakthrough success with the rotary engine in the 1960s to its current status as a global leader in design and innovation, Mazda has never been afraid to challenge the status quo and pursue its own vision of driving pleasure.

One of the most distinctive and beloved aspects of Mazda's identity is its rotary engine, also known as the Wankel engine. Unlike conventional piston engines, rotary engines use a triangular rotor that spins inside a chamber, creating a smooth and powerful output with fewer moving parts. Rotary engines are compact, lightweight, and capable of high revs, making them ideal for sports cars.

Mazda is the only automaker that has successfully mass-produced rotary engines and has used them in some of its most iconic models, such as the Cosmo Sport, the RX-7, and the RX-8. However, rotary engines also have some drawbacks, such as high fuel consumption, low torque, and high emissions. These challenges have made rotary engines increasingly difficult to comply with environmental regulations and consumer demands in recent years.

The last Mazda model to feature a rotary engine was the RX-8, which was discontinued in 2012. Since then, many fans have been eagerly awaiting the return of the rotary engine in a new Mazda sports car. Mazda has teased the possibility of a rotary revival several times, such as with the RX-Vision concept in 2015 and the RX-Vision GT3 concept in 2020. However, none of these concepts have materialized into production models.

Until now.

On October 25, 2023, Mazda unveiled its latest creation: the Iconic SP concept. The Iconic SP is a stunning two-seater sports car that combines Mazda's signature Kodo design language with futuristic elements. The Iconic SP features a sleek and aerodynamic body with a long hood, a short rear deck, and a low-slung stance. The front fascia is dominated by a large grille with a prominent Mazda logo, flanked by slim LED headlights. The side profile is characterized by smooth curves and sharp creases, creating a dynamic contrast between light and shadow. A large diffuser, dual exhaust tips, and a retractable spoiler highlight the rear end. The Iconic SP rides on 20-inch alloy wheels with carbon fiber accents.

But the most exciting part of the Mazda Iconic SP is what lies under the hood: a brand-new rotary hybrid engine. The Iconic SP is powered by a 1.6-liter twin-rotor engine that works in tandem with an electric motor and a battery pack. The rotary engine acts as a range extender for the electric motor, providing additional power when needed. The electric motor can also operate independently, allowing the Iconic SP to run in pure electric mode for short distances.

The Iconic SP's rotary hybrid engine delivers an impressive output of 450 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque, enabling the Iconic SP to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.5 seconds and reach a top speed of 200 mph. The Iconic SP also boasts an impressive fuel efficiency of 40 mpg combined and a low emission level of 50 g/km of CO2.

The Iconic SP's performance is further enhanced by its lightweight construction and advanced technology. The Iconic SP weighs only 2,800 pounds, thanks to its extensive use of carbon fiber and aluminum materials. The Iconic SP also features an adaptive suspension system that adjusts to different road conditions and driving modes, a regenerative braking system that recovers energy from braking, and an all-wheel drive system that optimizes traction and stability.

The Iconic SP's interior is equally impressive as its exterior. The Iconic SP offers a spacious and comfortable cabin for two passengers, with leather seats, carbon fiber trim, and ambient lighting. The Iconic SP also features a digital dashboard that displays vital information such as speed, rpm, battery level, and driving mode. The Iconic SP also comes with a 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system that supports Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Mazda Connect. The Iconic SP also offers a range of safety and convenience features, such as adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, blind spot monitor, rear cross-traffic alert, and a 360-degree camera.

The Iconic SP is not only a stunning sports car but also a tribute to Mazda's history and heritage. The Iconic SP's name is derived from the word "iconic," which means "relating to or of the nature of an icon." An icon is a symbol or representation of something that is revered or admired. The Iconic SP is meant to be an icon of Mazda's rotary legacy, as well as an icon of the future of sports cars.

The Iconic SP is also a celebration of Mazda's centenary, which was in 2020. The Iconic SP features a special badge on the front grille and the rear deck that reads "100 Years". The Iconic SP also comes in a unique color scheme that pays homage to Mazda's first rotary-powered car, the Cosmo Sport. The Iconic SP's exterior is painted in Soul Red Crystal, a deep and vivid red that represents Mazda's passion and spirit. The Iconic SP's interior is upholstered in Snow White Leather, a bright and elegant white that contrasts with the red exterior. The Iconic SP also features Cosmo Blue accents on the wheels, brake calipers, and stitching, a subtle nod to the Cosmo Sport's original color.

The Iconic SP is more than just a concept car. It is a statement of Mazda's vision and values. It is a demonstration of Mazda's commitment to innovation and excellence. It is a manifestation of Mazda's philosophy of "Jinba Ittai," which means "horse and rider as one." It is a reflection of Mazda's motto: "Zoom-Zoom."

The Iconic SP is expected to debut at the Tokyo Motor Show in November 2023, where it will be displayed alongside other Mazda models and concepts. The Iconic SP is also expected to go into production in 2024, with a limited run of 1,000 units worldwide. The Iconic SP will have a starting price of $150,000, making it the most expensive and exclusive Mazda model ever.

The Iconic SP is not for everyone. It is for those who appreciate the beauty and uniqueness of the rotary engine. It is for those who seek the thrill and joy of driving. It is for those who want to own a piece of automotive history and art.

The Iconic SP is for those who love Mazda.
