The MG Cyberster is a concept car that combines the heritage of the British sports car maker with a futuristic vision of electric mobility. The two-seater roadster, unveiled at the Shanghai Auto Show in April, is inspired by the classic MG B from the 1960s but features a sleek and modern design with LED lights, scissor doors, and a digital cockpit.
The MG Cyberster is not just a nostalgic tribute, though. It also showcases the potential of MG's electric vehicle technology, which promises a range of 500 miles, a 0-62 mph time of less than three seconds, and a 5G connectivity system. The concept car also features an interactive gaming cockpit that can simulate different driving scenarios and modes, such as autonomous driving, track racing, and road trips.
The MG Cyberster is the latest attempt by MG to reinvent itself as a global player in the automotive industry. The brand, founded in 1924 and became synonymous with affordable and fun sports cars, has undergone several ownership changes and financial troubles over the years. It was acquired by China's SAIC Motor in 2007 and, since then, has focused on expanding its presence in Asia and Europe, mainly with budget-friendly sedans and SUVs.
But MG has not forgotten its roots as a sports car maker and has been developing new models that aim to appeal to enthusiasts and younger buyers. The MG Cyberster is one of them, along with the MG E-Motion, a four-seater coupe concept that was revealed in 2017. According to MG, both cars are expected to enter production soon.
