2024 BMW X2: The Coupe-SUV That Wants to Be a Hot Hatch

2024 BMW X2: The Coupe-SUV That Wants to Be a Hot Hatch

The 2024 BMW X2 is not your typical SUV. It's not even your typical coupe-SUV, a niche segment that BMW pioneered with the original X6 back in 2008. The new BMW X2 is a radical departure from its predecessor, which looked more like a tall hatchback than a sporty crossover. The new model is bigger, bolder, and more aggressive, with a sleek fastback roofline, a sculpted front end, and a chunky rear end that can be fitted with optional quad exhaust pipes and a spoiler. It's a style that might polarize some buyers, but it's also a style that fits the type of customer BMW is aiming for: young, urban, and adventurous.

The 2024 BMW X2 is based on the same platform as the BMW X1, which was redesigned last year. Both models share the same powertrains, transmissions, and all-wheel-drive systems, but the X2 has a more dynamic character and a more distinctive appearance. The X2 also debuts the latest version of BMW's iDrive infotainment system, iDrive 9, which features a larger touchscreen, improved voice control, and enhanced connectivity. The X2 will be available in two main trims: the xDrive28i and the M35i xDrive. Both will offer plenty of performance, but the latter will also deliver extra spice for those wanting to unleash their inner racer.

More Power, More Fun

The 2024 BMW X2 xDrive28i is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 241 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. That's a significant increase from the previous model's 228 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. The engine is paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and an all-wheel-drive system that can vary the torque distribution between the front and rear axles depending on the driving situation. According to BMW, the xDrive28i can sprint from zero to 60 mph in 6.2 seconds and reach a top speed of 130 mph.

The 2024 BMW X2 M35i xDrive ups the ante with a more potent version of the same engine, tuned to deliver 312 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. The transmission and all-wheel-drive system are also upgraded to handle the extra power and provide sharper responses. The M35i xDrive can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 5.2 seconds and hit a top speed of 155 mph. It also comes with an M-specific exhaust system that adds some growl to the soundtrack and an M Sport suspension, brakes, steering, and differential that enhance the handling and stability.

Both models come with various driving modes that allow the driver to adjust the engine, transmission, steering, and suspension settings according to their preferences and road conditions. The modes include Eco Pro, Comfort, Sport, and Sport Plus (exclusive to the M35i xDrive). The BMW X2 also features an adaptive cruise control system that can automatically adjust the speed and distance to the vehicle ahead and a lane-keeping assist system that can gently steer the vehicle back into its lane if it detects an unintentional departure.

More Space, More Tech

The 2024 BMW X2 is more powerful than its predecessor, spacious, and technologically advanced. The new model is 7.6 inches longer, 0.8 inch wider, and 2.5 inches taller than before, with a 0.9-inch longer wheelbase. This translates into more legroom for rear-seat passengers and cargo space behind them. The X2 offers 25.3 cubic feet of luggage capacity with the rear seats up and 51.7 cubic feet with them folded down. That's still less than what some rivals offer, but it's a noticeable improvement over the previous model's 21.6 and 50.1 cubic feet.

The interior of the new X2 is also more modern and upscale than before, with high-quality materials, ambient lighting, and ergonomic controls. The centerpiece of the dashboard is a 12.3-inch touchscreen that runs the iDrive 9 infotainment system. This system features a new user interface that is more intuitive and customizable than before and enhanced voice control that can understand natural language commands and queries. The system also supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration and over-the-air software updates.

The X2 also has a digital instrument cluster that can display various information such as speed, navigation directions, driver assistance alerts, and media information. The driver can choose from different layouts depending on the driving mode or personal preference. The X2 also offers an optional head-up display that projects key information onto the windshield in front of the driver's eyes, such as speed, navigation instructions, and traffic signs.

The BMW X2 has a range of safety and convenience features that make driving easier and more enjoyable. Standard features include a rearview camera, front and rear parking sensors, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane departure warning. Some optional features include a 360-degree camera system, adaptive LED headlights, a panoramic sunroof, a wireless charging pad, a Harman Kardon sound system, and a heated steering wheel and seats.

More Style, More Attitude

The 2024 BMW X2 is not a subtle vehicle. It's a vehicle that wants to stand out from the crowd and make a statement. It's a vehicle that combines the practicality of an SUV with the sportiness of a coupe and the attitude of a hot hatch. It's a vehicle that appeals to drivers who value performance, style, and individuality.

The new X2 has a more aggressive and distinctive design than its predecessor, with sharper lines, larger air intakes, and slimmer headlights. The kidney grille is also larger and more angular than before and features vertical bars instead of horizontal ones. The side profile is dominated by the sloping roofline, the muscular fenders, and the large wheels that range from 18 to 20 inches in diameter. The rear end is equally striking, with slim taillights, a prominent bumper, and an integrated spoiler.

The new X2 also offers more customization options than before, with various colors, trims, and packages to choose from. The xDrive28i can be ordered with the Sport Line or the M Sport package, which adds different bumpers, side skirts, and wheels to enhance the sporty look. The M35i xDrive comes standard with the M Sport package but can also be upgraded with the M Performance package, which adds carbon fiber exterior accents, black mirror caps, and an M Performance steering wheel. The X2 also offers some unique colors that are exclusive to this model, such as Brooklyn Grey metallic and Phytonic Blue metallic.

The 2024 BMW X2 is not for everyone. It's for drivers who want something different from the usual SUVs. It's for drivers who want something that combines fun, functionality, and flair. It's for drivers who want something that reflects their personality and lifestyle. The new BMW X2 is expected to arrive in the U.S. in spring 2024, with prices starting at $39,995 for the BMW X2 xDrive28i and $49,995 for the BMW X2 M35i xDrive. If you're looking for a coupe-SUV that wants to be a hot hatch, you might want to check it out.
